The benefits of studying abroad

Studying a new language abroad can be a defining moment in students’ lives and have an impact on them for years afterwards. The experience influences their worldview, career paths and self-confidence. Here are some of the most important noted benefits of undertaking studies abroad:

Personal growth

One of the main benefits of embarking on a study-abroad experience is that of personal growth. The unique space in which students learn, experience and explore another culture does wonders for soul maturity. Not only does the experience boost self-confidence, but it also foments new ties with other students and enables students to tolerate ambiguity and diversity.

Intercultural development

Study abroad teaches students to be more effective leaders who are respectful of other cultures and political and economic systems. For those interested in taking an English course London is a popular destination, while for those wanting to take a geology course New Zealand is often the first choice. But regardless of where they go, young people who have the experience of studying abroad are more willing to take a stand for the world’s welfare, not just what benefits a specific country. What results is a more sophisticated way of looking at the world, as students gain a stronger understanding of their own cultural values and biases.

Education and career attainment

Deciding to study abroad – whether it’s to take language school English classes or university diplomas – can influence students’ subsequent educational decisions. Many end up expanding or changing the topic of academic study and taking on international work and volunteering. Also, the experience allows students to acquire skill sets that influence their career path, the direction of which is often determined taking into account the experience.

A lifetime of benefits

Few experiences in life yield such a sustainable and positive impact. Study abroad provides academic, intercultural, career, social and personal benefits and impact participants’ lives long after their time abroad. The experience continues to influence interactions with people from different cultures and promotes firm, long-lasting ties with host-country friends. Students cite the experience as motivating them to seek out a greater diversity of friends and explore other cultures.
